Prof. A.M. Shah completed his PhD from MS University, Baroda (1964) and briefly lectured there before moving to the University of Delhi, from where he retired as Professor of Sociology in 1996. Prof. Shah was ICSSR national fellow at Delhi University (1996-98); he also held several significant fellowships including those at the University of Chicago (1960-61); the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford (1961-62) etc. He has authored over a hundred papers and 7 books including “The Household Dimension of the Family in India” (1973), co-authored with I.P. Desai, “Division and Hierarchy: An Overview of Caste in Gujarat”(1985),  and more recently, “Structure of Indian Society: Then and Now”(2010), “The Writings of A.M. Shah: The Household and Family in India”(2013), “Sociology and History: Dialogues towards Integration” (2016).
